COVID-19 declines in 2020 vitamin A supplementation levels
Several visuals were developed to show how 2020 vitamin A supplementation levels compared to 2019 coverage levels. One important element of the story that emerged was how the most severe declines occurred during the first half of 2020 when widespread mass campaigns were suspended.
It was also important to show how declines and rebounds in coverage were not universal. In particular, countries with the highest child mortality, and therefore the greatest need for supplementation, had the lowest coverage in 2020. And, in the context of COVID-19, vitamin A supplementation delivery through routine systems was more resilient than delivery campaigns.
Several charts were developed with these overarching concepts in mind - two appeared as part of a peer reviewed journal publication...and, as happens, several landed on the cutting room floor.
