Chapel Hill Transit Common Destinations
Personal Project
Inspired by projects that mapped connectivity in larger, urban settings, I built this chart to visualize Chapel Hill Transit bus service linkages across common destinations.
The process was iterative. Charts of the Paris and Washington, DC metro systems sparked the idea, and I started exploring what similar data might exist for Chapel Hill. Route names, colors and destinations were collected from the Chapel Hill Transit website. My first prototypes used time point connections from route schedules, but they proved less useful than the Common Destinations identified by Chapel Hill Transit.
Before final inking, peer feedback led me to add icon hubs that identified the types of destinations (for example, parks & recreation, shopping, social services) for readers unfamiliar with a particular destination name. I also grouped the 21 bus routes into 3 sets of 7 to help visually orient the eye. Finally, I adjusted the service lines to reflect weekend as well as weekday service: routes that did not operate on weekends were removed from the lower 2/7ths of the bottom-right corner of the hub.
